How is the Bird of the Year doing in our region?

Presentation on meadow bird protection for Lapwings in East Frisia

"Water march!" – with this slogan, the Lapwing, a meadow bird that needs a lot of water to breed, won the public vote in Germany for Bird of the Year. Of the almost 120,000 votes, around 28% went to the Lapwing, allowing it to call itself Bird of the Year for the second time since. The Lapwing was elected for the first time in 1996. Its population trend was already considered worrying back then. In Lower Saxony, the breeding population fell by 70% between 1961 and 1993. Although this trend has been mitigated since then, it has not yet been reversed.

On 18 April, employees of the Nature Conservation Station Ems and the EU project "GrassBirdHabitats" will present the Bird of the Year 2024 in a one-hour presentation and discuss the causes of the Lapwing's decline as well as protection options. The event starts at 5.30 pm at the Nature Conservation Station Ems, Schöpfwerkstraße 10, 26802 Moormerland.

The event is organised by NLWKN.
