The LIFE programme
European funding instrument
The LIFE programme is a funding instrument of the European Union. It exists since 1992 and is designed to support reaching the objectives of EU legislation and policy on the environment and climate action. Therefore, it exclusively supports nature conservation, environmental protection and climate change concerns. Currently, LIFE is structured in four sub-programmes:
- Nature and Biodiversity
- Circular Economy and Quality of Life
- Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
- Clean Energy Transition
For the 2021–2027 period, the EU has increased the LIFE programme funding by almost 60%, up to 5.4 billion euro. So far, LIFE has co-financed more than 5,500 projects – one of them being GrassBirdHabitats.
