Lower Saxony Water Management, Coastal and Nature Protection Agency (NLWKN)
Since 2005, the tasks of water management and nature conservation of the state of Lower Saxony are concentrated in the Lower Saxony Water Management, Coastal and Nature Protection Agency. With the head office in Norden and eleven operating locations, the NLWKN is represented throughout all of Lower Saxony.
The NLWKN consists of seven divisions and is, among other things, the technical authority for nature conservation in Lower Saxony. Its Division for Nature Conservation is based in Hanover. The NLWKN-associated Nature Conservation Stations Dümmer, Fehntjer Tief, Ems and Unterelbe are also part of this division and assume duties of nature conservation site management.
The Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection of Lower Saxony has commissioned NLWKN’s Division for Nature Conservation to implement and manage the LIFE project GrassBirdHabitats. Within this division, the NLWKN project staff is assigned to the State Agency for Bird Conservation.
In this project, the NLWKN has both a coordinating and a technical role. Therefore, it is involved in almost all actions, including overall project management, habitat-optimising measures, capacity building, monitoring and public relations.
