Description

West Africa plays a significant role in the life cycle of many migratory wet grassland breeding birds. In fact, many birds that breed in northern European wet grasslands (e. g. in the Netherlands and Northern Germany) spend the majority of their time in their wintering grounds in West Africa.

Essential wintering grounds and project areas are the Senegal River watershed (shared between Senegal and Mauritania), the Saloum delta (Senegal) and the Casamance region (Senegal) as well as adjacent areas.

Our project develops many actions in West Africa, including bird population monitoring, capacity building activities, developing alternative and bird-friendly agricultural models, and supports local, regional, and international conservation initiatives. Further, the project will support the development of a strategy for wet grassland bird conservation in West Africa, part of the larger multi-species Strategic Conservation Plan for migratory birds along the East Atlantic Flyway.
