This year’s arrival of the first Black-tailed Godwit at Lake Dümmer

Last week marked an early surprise as the first Black-tailed Godwit reached Lake Dümmer after spending the last few months in its wintering grounds. This early arrival is in contrast to previous experience. Just a few years ago, these rare birds did usually not appear in the region until mid-March.

Meanwhile, our northernmost tagged Godwit is currently taking a well-deserved pitstop in the picturesque Camargue region of southern France.

It's a vital pause in its journey northward, offering a moment of respite before it resumes its grand migration. There it rests before spending the breeding season and its summer months somewhere between our project areas Friesland and Freiburg.

In the meantime, our project staff are preparing to equip more Black-tailed Godwits with GPS transmitters in the coming season.
