Like a needle in a haystack

Unveiling the hidden homes of rare Snipes

Our recently released press information depicts an exceptional conservation initiative focused on the Common Snipe. Ornithologists from various regions converged on Germany's Dümmer, a Special Protection Area and bird sanctuary.

They came to undertake an unprecedented mission: locating the well-concealed nests of these ground-nesting birds. Their nests, ingeniously camouflaged within dense vegetation, have long evaded discovery.

Led by project manager Heinrich Belting, the participants aimed to unravel the secrets of the Common Snipe's breeding biology. With only two nests discovered in this year's search, the challenges of finding these nests are evident. Advanced techniques, including thermal drone imaging, were employed to locate them.

The press release underscores the urgency of understanding these secretive birds to develop effective conservation strategies. This recent endeavor marks a crucial step forward in preserving the dwindling population of the Common Snipe.
